On March 20, James released Turning Toward Spring, a CD of nine original jazz fusion songs. While the harmonic content comes mostly from jazz, the tones and energy draw from rock and blues. The rhythms are influenced by Bossa Nova, Samba, the blues, West African popular music, as well as the odd meter tradition within jazz fusion. The material was performed live in the studio by a quartet: James on electric guitar; Matt Hollander on electric bass; Michael B-B on jazz organ; Chris Sandoval on the trap set; Francisco Martinez on congas (three tracks). Turning Toward Spring CD cover

The theme of this album is about the ecological and soul-based energy that resurfaces after a long winter. There is an inner awakening that begins in late winter when we realize that the cold is almost over.
